Mining Law Reform -- Contact your Senators Now! Ask them to oppose HR 2262 in the Senate and support responsible, common-sense changes to the Mining Law
HR 2262, The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 passed the House of Representatives on November 1. This draconian legislation threatens your job, your community, and America's national and economic security. HR 2262 will confiscate mining investments, virtually eliminate new mining on Western Public Lands, cause the premature closure of existing mines and increase America's reliance on foreign sources of minerals. The U.S. Senate is likely to develop its version of a bill to update the Mining Law in the near future. Click READ MORE for talking points or click on TAKE ACTION to send a letter to encourage the Senate to pass a fair and practical Mining Law bill that will encourage responsible development of the Nation's hardrock mineral resources.

Determining what constitutes a taking and the appropriate remedies when it occurs have proven problematic for the courts. The federal government is rarely required to fairly compensate landowners for takings when ESA regulations and listings diminish the value of private ... Read More ...

The Act needs to be reformed to place greater emphasis on recovery actions over bureaucratic listing actions. It must encourage the use of innovative approaches to increase species' populations. This can be done, in part, by moving the designation of critical habitat into the development of species recovery planning. ... Read More ...

Oppose listing the polar bear as threatened under ESA!
Currently the Fish and Wildlife Service has undertaken analysis as to whether or not the polar bear should be listed as a threatened species. The Endangered Species Act uses five criteria for listing an animal, one of which is “present or threatened destruction, modification or curtailment of its habitat or range.” This specific criteria would be the justification for listing the polar bear as a t ... Oppose Reinstatement of the Clinton Roadless Rule
One of the most worrisome developments to occur in public lands policy in recent years was the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Roadless Area Conservation Rule instituted by the Clinton Administration in 2001. The Clinton roadless rule proposed to permanently lock up 58.5 million acres of inventoried roadless areas throughout the U.S. About 97 percent of all roadless areas would be in 12 ... Read More ...
